St Andrew's, Wickhambreaux
The picturesque village of Wickhambreaux, is fortunate to have a very special church.
From the moment you walk through the gate, and up the path to the heavy (and very wide) door, you can feel those who have walked that path before you.
Inside, the church is as it should be, quiet, peaceful - unpoilt.
Then you see the East window, a sight never to be forgotten. I love the art nouveau era anyway, but could anyone not be drawn to this window?
Some years ago, I bought an old copy of The Kings England, Kent, by Arthur Mee. Turning to his entry for Wickhambreaux, I found these words :
" ....Across the green men have come to this church for 600 years and more. We feel that we like it the moment we enter, but the impression does not last; the decoration is too much for us, and we sigh for a few square inches of good stone wall. The frescoes over the tower and chancel arches are old, but all the rest is nothing......"
NOTHING? How sad that he could not see the beauty in this magnificent window.
If you have not seen it for yourself, then you must.
